Silver Lake College senior Sophia Chin balances athletics, academics

Ever since arriving at Silver Lake College, Sophia Chin has been putting her best foot forward.

Literally.

“I never did any type of running at all before I got here,” she said. “The only running I did a little bit was warm-ups in gym class, but that didn’t really count. So being in cross country has been an interesting change for me.”

Sophia, who started her senior year earlier this week, has made such impressive strides in cross country that she qualified for the USCAA Cross Country National Championships last fall — and she’ll be striving for a repeat trip this season.

Silver Lake College hosts 2014-2015 season of Zimmer Forum

The 2014-2015 season of the Fr. Bill Zimmer Forum, co-sponsored by Silver Lake College and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, begins Sept. 9 and continues monthly throughout the academic year.

The book group sessions are open to the public and will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Endries Hall, located in the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance, on the campus of Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road. Books are available at Silver Lake College’s Zigmunt Library and other area libraries.

Silver Lake College presents Franciscan art exhibit starting Sept. 12

Silver Lake College will present a 2014 reflective Franciscan art exhibit, titled “Community,” from Sept. 12 through Oct. 11 in the art wing at Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The exhibit is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays; and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays.

The exhibit features a variety of media — ranging from sculptures to paintings to a 4-foot-tall San Damiano crucifix — created by members of the Franciscan Sisterhood and other artists. The title “Community” stems from the sense of community and respect for...

SLC’s Golay co-authors paper in Journal of Forestry

Michaeleen Golay, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Natural Science Department at Silver Lake College, co-authored a paper that appeared in the July 2014 volume of the Journal of Forestry, an international scholarly journal for foresters and forest management professionals.

The paper is titled “Collaborative Learning about Forest Understory Restoration and Management: Identifying Goals and Sharing Knowledge.” It details the methods that Golay, along with Philip M. SLC hosting literary roundtable on Sept. 17

The Silver Lake College English Department will host a literary roundtable discussion, titled “Summer Reading Recap,” on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at noon in room 313 of the main college building.

The half-hour gathering is free and open to the public. Participants are invited to share and discuss favorite books from their summer reading. 

The English Department hosts about three literary roundtables on varying topics each semester. Those interested are invited to learn more about the English Department’s upcoming events on the Silver Lake College English Community Facebook page.

Holy Family Conservatory of Music Announces 2014-2015 Recital Schedule

The Holy Family Conservatory of Music announced its student recital schedule for the 2014-2015 season.

Performances will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 14, Jan. 18, Feb. 22, March 1, April 19, April 26, May 17, June 21 and July 19.

Silver Lake College excited about renovation projects

Silver Lake College students returning for the start of the 2014-15 academic year will notice a pair of renovation projects designed to better serve their needs.

Demolition begins in earnest next week on the lobby inside the college’s main entrance on the north side of Main Hall. The most notable transformations associated with Phase 1 of the project are the addition of a Welcome Center, a Starbucks coffee shop and cafe, and spirit/gift shop.

PULASKI – Abbey Behnke enrolled in Silver Lake College’s Learning Community with the goal of earning her master’s degree in Teacher Leadership.

But she ended up coming away with more than just a degree.

“This program made me not only a better teacher, but a better wife, a better mother and a better person,” said Behnke, who earned her Teacher Leadership degree in June 2014 and immediately re-enrolled in this year’s program to receive her master’s degree in Administrative Leadership.

Silver Lake College receives $150,000 Career Ready Internship Grant

For the second straight year, Silver Lake College has been awarded a $150,000 Career Ready Internship Grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.

It’s one of 40 colleges and universities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Ohio that was awarded a total of $5.2 million in new grants for the 2014-15 academic year. The grant helps colleges collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits to develop paid internships for juniors and seniors and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities.

SLC’s Flentje retiring as AD, staying on as women’s basketball coach

Mike Flentje is retiring as the athletic director at Silver Lake College but will be staying on as the Lakers women’s basketball coach.

Flentje has been the Lakers athletic director since the 2010-11 academic year. This will be his seventh season as the women’s basketball coach.

Natalie Long has joined Silver Lake College as its Director of Library Services. She had been serving as the Support Staff Coordinator at Lester Public Library in Two Rivers. Long earned her Master of Library and Information Science Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after completing her Bachelor’s Degree in English at Silver Lake College. Long and her husband, Max, live in her hometown of Manitowoc.

The Silver Lake College instrumental ensembles, under the direction of Jeremiah Eis, Sandra Eithun and Monica Hrudik, announced dates for their 2014-15 season.
