Silver Lake College Showcases New Art Exhibits

Gallery 117 is showcasing two new art exhibits, both of which are open to the public through Aug. 10. The gallery is located in the lower level of the main building at Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

One exhibit features works from Silver Lake College’s permanent collection. They consist of lithographs by well-known artists as well as several etchings, block prints and sculptures.

Another section of Gallery 117 spotlights wood carvings and silk screens of wildlife by Randy Manlick, a graduate in Studio Art from Silver Lake College.

Silver Lake College’s Rahmlow to Speak at Western Governors Commencement Ceremony

Jeff Rahmlow, an IT Systems Specialist at Silver Lake College, will be a speaker at Western Governors University’s commencement ceremony, which is scheduled for July 12 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Rahmlow completed his bachelor’s degree at WGU on June 3. He enrolled full-time at the online university in December 2008. WGU is anticipating that about 1,500 of its roughly 6,000 summer graduates will walk across the stage on commencement day.

Silver Lake College art professors showcase skills on Newton Meats mural

A once-gray exterior wall at Newton Meats has been brought to life thanks to the artistic vision of the business’ owner and the talents of two art professors at Silver Lake College.

On Monday, professor Sister Mariella Erdmann and assistant professor Erin LaBonte completed the mural, which features four panels — each illustrating a country theme. Each panel is about 10 feet high and 12 feet wide.

Portee to play basketball for Silver Lake College

Jordan Portee, a point guard from Ridge View High School (South Carolina), has signed a letter of intent to attend Silver Lake College in the fall and play for the men’s basketball team.

“I like the program and their coach (Phil Budervic),” Portee said in a story recently posted online at ColaDaily.com. “He has the same mindset as me. (He likes) playing hard on defense and a fast-tempo offense. He believes in working hard and getting better.”

Silver Lake College Unveils Franciscan Music Center Website

Silver Lake College has unveiled a website — www.franciscanmusiccenter.org — dedicated to its new Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance, which is located on campus at 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The website, best viewed via Google Chrome, features a variety of photographs and information about upcoming concerts and events, college music programs, facility rentals and more. It also showcases programs and events for the Holy Family Conservatory of Music, which is now housed at the Franciscan Music Center.
