SLC’s Artist Music Series features acclaimed pianist Vatchnadze

World-renowned pianist George Vatchnadze will be performing in Manitowoc on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. as part of Silver Lake College’s 2014-2015 Artist Music Series.

The concert will be held at Endries Hall, located on campus at the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance, 2406 S. Alverno Road. Vatchnadze will perform works by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

Vatchnadze joined the DePaul University faculty as Associate Professor of Piano in September 2011.

MANITOWOC — It’s hard to miss Amanda Kudick on a basketball court.

No, she’s not the tallest player. Nor is she trying to pull off highlight-reel plays every time she has the ball.

Rather, the 5-foot-7 sophomore draws attention from teammates and opponents alike because of her unbridled effort on every play and pure passion for winning. Pesek brings experience, international flavor to SLC men’s basketball team

As the first international player in Silver Lake College men’s basketball history, Filip Pesek doesn’t take his role lightly.

“It’s a big responsibility, because based on my efforts and the image I’m going to give, there might be others who follow or no one will follow,” he said.

Pesek, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, transferred to Silver Lake College after attending Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif., last year. He’s majoring in business, with aspirations of becoming a successful entrepreneur after college.

Fatzo’s mural ‘a nice addition to the neighborhood’

As a resident of the neighborhood, Erin LaBonte has walked past Fatzo’s Subs and Pizza countless times.

But it wasn’t until vandals defaced part of the business’ facade last year that the inspiration struck to paint a mural.

LaBonte, an Assistant Professor of Art at Silver Lake College, approached Fatzo’s owner Josie Krause in August and asked if she’d be interested. A few weeks later, paint brushes began transforming the wall.

Kane Smego, an award-winning spoken word poet and educator, will give a presentation on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

Silver Lake College will host an exhibit by professional artists Teresa Lind and Garrett Krueger from Oct. 30 through Nov. 30.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Gallery 117, located on campus at 2406 S. Alverno Road.

Lind graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Drawing, Painting and Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After studying at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, in 2002, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduating in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Sculpture.

SLC volleyball team lends a helping hand to Two Rivers man

A Two Rivers man is living at home again thanks in large part to the efforts of the Silver Lake College women’s volleyball team.

The team members were instrumental in the construction of a wheelchair ramp outside the man’s home. They volunteered parts of the past two weekends to build the ramp so the man could leave an area nursing home and return home.

“I couldn't be more proud of the dedication and character of our young women,” said Randy Ammerman, SLC Director of Campus Safety, who assisted with the project, which was completed Sunday.

Eckley’s fourth-place finish leads SLC golf team

Manitowoc native Nate Eckley shot a 91 and took fourth place overall, leading the Silver Lake College golf team at its season-ending invitational, which was held Wednesday at The Golf Course at Branch River in Cato.

Also for the Lakers, Dru Harris shot a 100 and Kevin Ramirez finished with a 104. Teammate Derek Domino withdrew due to an injury.
