Kiel's Mary Jo Meyer returns to school 40 years later, earns Theology degree at SLC

Mary Jo Meyer of rural Kiel left college in 1975 at the end of her junior year.

Now, nearly 40 years later, she finally has her degree.

Wearing a cap and gown, Meyer, 60, walked down the aisle to accept her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology at Silver Lake College on Dec. 13.

As a young college student, Meyer had changed her major twice before she decided to drop out and raise a family. Six children and 13 grandchildren later, she felt compelled to complete her degree as she watched her own grown children pursuing higher educations.

SLC's Craig Krueger accepted to Emory law school

Silver Lake College helped senior Craig Krueger build a foundation for admission to one of the top law schools in the country.

The recent graduate has been accepted to Emory University School of Law, ranked 19th among law schools by U.S. News & World Report.

“Getting into a school of that caliber is pretty rare. They have a 30 percent acceptance rate,” said Krueger, 21, who plans to start classes in fall at the Atlanta university.

He made the cut thanks to excellent college grades and a high score on his law school admission test.

Libby Spencer embodies spirit of Silver Lake College

Libby Spencer definitely made the most of her time at Silver Lake College.

In addition to earning a bachelor’s degree in only three years, Spencer participated in an array of campus activities and embraced a leadership role as a Mother Generose Cahill Scholarship recipient.

“I’ve always loved everything about Silver Lake College and appreciate what it has given me, and I’ve tried my best to represent the college well and help make a difference,” she said. “I truly enjoyed my time here.”

Silver Lake College United Way helps paint mural at The Gardens

Senior residents now have beautiful murals to look at while exercising at The Gardens at Felician Village, thanks in large part to the Silver Lake College United Way.

Led by Erin LaBonte, an Assistant Professor of Art and a Student United Way advisor, nearly a dozen people took part in the week-long project, which concluded Friday.

The fitness room walls, which previously were bare, now feature a three-walled water scene, complete with a lighthouse, sailboat, birds, shining sun and the S.S. Badger car ferry. Another portion of the room features a green landscape with a tree and birds.

SLC junior Raelyn Woock excels on, off the basketball court

Raelyn Woock doesn’t need Pilates, treadmills or workout routines during the offseason.

Rather, the Silver Lake College women’s basketball player relies on good old-fashioned hard work to stay on top of her game.

“At my summer job in a feed mill, I’m throwing around 50-pound bags, 100-pound bags all day,” said the 5-foot-11 junior. “And I work on a dairy farm, too, so I’m handling cattle and pushing them around all day. I’m always doing a lot of physical work.”

As Alonzo Kelly stood behind the speaker’s podium at Fort Drum, a U.S. Army base in northern New York state, he looked out over the group of military personnel — fully aware that any one of them could be deployed at a moment’s notice.
