Silver Lake College and the Wisconsin Technical College System are making it easier for area nursing students to earn bachelor’s degrees.

Silver Lake College to become America’s first Catholic higher education institution to adopt a Work College model

To better prepare students for a 21st century work environment, Silver Lake College is poised to become America’s first Catholic higher education institution to adopt the Work College model.

On May 22, the college’s board of directors approved moving toward full compliance and adoption of the federal Work College model.

Adjacent to Dr. Michaeleen Golay’s office at Silver Lake College is a greenhouse, where she grows a variety of succulents and ferns, pineapple plants and even the carrion flower, which emits the slight stench of rotting flesh when it blooms.

Golay, Assistant Professor in the Natural Science Department, cultivates the plants for her Introduction to Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology students.

Next to the greenhouse is the college’s herbarium, where dried plant specimens are organized in tall cabinets and preserved for study.

Silver Lake College to hold blood drive June 2

Silver Lake College will sponsor a BloodCenter of Wisconsin blood drive from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on June 2 in the Ariens Atrium, located on campus in the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The blood drive celebrates June Dairy Month. All attempting donors will receive a complimentary ticket to Breakfast on the Farm, which will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on June 14 at the Orthland Dairy on South Union Road in Cleveland.

Silver Lake College student Robert Pauly of St. Cloud, Wis., has been appointed to the position of President of the Lakers Legislation student government for the first semester of the 2015-2016 academic year.

Pauly, who previously served as vice president, replaces Justin Mrotek, who graduated earlier this month.

As the sports world turns its attention to baseball, Steve Kuehl sits at his computer cranking out thousands of words about his favorite sport.

The Silver Lake College Mathematics Instructor and Department Chair interweaves anecdotes with statistics as he polishes his contributions to two books on baseball — one focuses on the Detroit Tigers, the other on the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kuehl grew up in the Escanaba area of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula rooting for the Tigers and now lives in Plymouth, still a fervent Tigers fan.

He said he is enjoying the research process for his book contributions.
