Music experts from around the globe came to Silver Lake College to honor Sister Lorna Zemke with the 2015 International Katalin Forrai Award, which is bestowed upon those with distinguished careers in Early Childhood Music Education.

Sister Lorna, a longtime music professor at Silver Lake College, was presented with the award on June 28 during the opening dinner for the 2015 Kodály Summer Music Program.

SLC representatives help Salvation Army's Feed The Kids program

Silver Lake College representatives are helping a local program feed hundreds of area children this summer.

They are volunteering for the Salvation Army of Manitowoc County’s Feed The Kids summer food program, which provides nutritious lunches to nearly 500 children in Manitowoc and Two Rivers each weekday through Aug. 28. Free lunches are distributed to children 18 and younger who are in need of a meal.

SLC student Aaron Davis working hard to make a difference in people's lives

Silver Lake College junior Aaron Davis is determined to earn his degree in three years.

This summer, visitors might see Davis, a native of Springfield, Ohio, sitting at Silver Lake College’s Welcome Desk at the Ariens Family Welcome Center.

What they may not know is that he has an additional third-shift job at a local firm, plus two evening classes at the college. That’s in addition to the extra classes he took during his sophomore year so he could graduate in the spring of 2016.

But performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers baseball game earlier this summer was, well, more rattling that ever.

The minor-league team plays home games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, just outside Appleton.

Silver Lake College exhibit features retired soldier’s artifacts, photos

When Edgar Hansen of Manitowoc was stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2003 and 2010, he picked up intricately woven carpets from Kabul, exquisite Iraqi vases and numerous bronze and brass figurines of Hindu and Buddhist origins.

“Some of the things are quite decorative and quite beautiful,” Hansen said. “My grandchildren tease me. They say, ‘Grandpa lives in a museum.’”
