SLC student gaining appreciation for nature

MANITOWOC, Wis. — On a cooler day, Anna Hall of Denmark might be found inside painting purple martin houses at Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Preserve, located between Manitowoc and Two Rivers.

When the weather warms up, she heads outside to pluck invasive species — buckthorn, honeysuckle and garlic mustard — so they don’t push out native plants and wreak havoc with the habitat of the nearly 1,500-acre nature preserve made up of hardwood and conifer forests, wetlands and prairies.

SLC nursing students help patients in Haiti

MANITOWOC, Wis. — While college students often head to the beach over spring break, this group spent their week off in service of others.

Seven Silver Lake College nursing students traveled to the impoverished Caribbean country of Haiti in mid-March to provide medical service and education to its people. They partnered with St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, in cooperation with the Diocese of Green Bay.

Mission trip draws students closer to faith

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Eight students lived the Franciscan mission of Silver Lake College in mid-March when they took part in the Appalachian Spring Break Mission Trip, led by Shaun Johnson, director of campus ministry.

The students traveled to Johnson City, Tennessee, where they "worked on seeing and encountering Christ in each other and those they were called to serve by living in a Christian community centered in prayer and acts of Christian Charity," Johnson said.

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Silver Lake College will present the senior art exhibit, “Sekainosozo: Creation of Worlds,” from April 2 through May 13 in the Donald P. Taylor Gallery on campus, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The exhibit, which features the works of student artists Sarah Presley and Miranda Chase, is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A reception for the artists will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 13. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

MANITOWOC, Wis. — As Megan Baradic puts the finishing touches on the next art project, Jefferson Elementary School children begin filing into her room for “Art with Megan.”

Miss Megan, as they call her, teaches an art enrichment class at the Jefferson Community Learning Center, a free before- and after-school program at the Manitowoc school. The afternoon portion of the program is a perfect fit for Megan, a junior majoring in art education at Silver Lake College.
