Students participating in Silver Lake College’s Look Ahead Lakers Camp Explore had the opportunity to give back and show their appreciation for area police officers this week.

Camp Explore, for students entering grades 3-9, provides children the opportunity to get a taste of the college experience on the Silver Lake College campus, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

This year’s campers created “We Care Kits” for area police officers, including 65 for the Manitowoc Police Department, which were delivered to the department July 26. Each kit included a bag of assorted candies and bottled water.

"With everything happening in the world today, we thought it was important to recognize what our officers do for us and to show our appreciation to them," said Camp Director Julie Kautzer.

Students were able to learn more about the daily life of a police officer and their gear, along with receiving a tour of the department. An additional 25 kits will be delivered to the City of Two Rivers Police Department.

“It’s very nice of course,” said Deputy Chief Rob Barbier of the students’ gesture. “The outpouring of support from the community has been outstanding in the last few weeks. Our jobs are many times thankless, so I think it’s having a great effect on the officers to know the community appreciates what we do.”
