Fatzo’s mural ‘a nice addition to the neighborhood’

UNDERGRAD_resizedimage350284-SLC-Fatzos-Subs-2As a resident of the neighborhood, Erin LaBonte has walked past Fatzo’s Subs and Pizza countless times.

But it wasn’t until vandals defaced part of the business’ facade last year that the inspiration struck to paint a mural.

LaBonte, an Assistant Professor of Art at Silver Lake College, approached Fatzo’s owner Josie Krause in August and asked if she’d be interested. A few weeks later, paint brushes began transforming the wall.

The eye-catching mural, which incorporates Fatzo’s logo as well as a pizza-themed globe, was started Sept. 17 and completed Oct. 8. Assisting LaBonte were three of her Silver Lake College art students — Amber Kiel, Erin Kiel and Randy Gruenweller.

“We all love it!” Krause said. “It looks great. We are very pleased with the way it turned out.”

Added Will Gauger, a nearby homeowner, “It’s a nice addition to the neighborhood. I would like to see more of this.”

Throughout the painting process, community members encouraged the artists, and some even stopped for a while to help paint.

Gruenweller and Erin Kiel said that working collaboratively was fun and rewarding.

Added Amber Kiel: “I believe that having a mural can greatly impact a community, especially having it so close to a school (Lincoln High School), because hopefully it will inspire kids to express their creativity in a positive way.”

Fatzo’s is located at 1421 S. 10th St., Manitowoc.
