Silver Lake College honored three individuals during Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 7.

The honors were presented by Dr. Chris E. Domes, President of Silver Lake College (second from right).

Sister Mariella S. Erdmann (far right) was named Professor Emeritus, a status awarded to a retired faculty member who has made substantial contributions to Silver Lake College and to his or her profession. The honor allows her to retain all the rights of a faculty member. Sister Mariella retired from Silver Lake College in 2015, after a 38-year affiliation with the College. She began as Art Instructor and was Director of the Art Program at the time of her retirement. Much of her art enriches the campus. Sister Mariella is presently Postulant Directress for the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

Former Wisconsin Congressman Thomas “Tom” Petri (left) received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Silver Lake College. Rep. Petri, a Republican, was the U.S. Representative from Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District from 1979 to 2015. On his retirement, Rep. Petri was commended for being able to set aside partisan ideology for the good of Wisconsin. He also was praised for respecting the teaching profession and helping bring about student loan reforms. Rep. Petri has been a staunch supporter of the College and appeared at SLC in October for a Civic Participation Lecture Series.

Sister Laura Wolf, President of the Manitowoc-based Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sponsored Ministries, Inc. (second from left), received the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award. The award is conferred on individuals who have made significant contributions in advancing the College’s mission for a significant period of time and who exemplify the ideals of the College. It is named for Our Lady of Guadalupe, the special patroness of Silver Lake College. Sister Laura will soon step down from the role she’s held since 1985. Daniel McGinty will succeed her on June 1, 2016 and she will serve as his Senior Executive Advisor.
