For the second straight year, Silver Lake College has been awarded a $150,000 Career Ready Internship Grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.
It’s one of 40 colleges and universities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Ohio that was awarded a total of $5.2 million in new grants for the 2014-15 academic year. The grant helps colleges collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits to develop paid internships for juniors and seniors and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities.
“We place a premium on ideas that work, and our Career Ready Internship Grants help level the playing field for students who receive financial aid,” said Richard D. George, Great Lakes’ president and chief executive officer. “This program has the added benefit of developing relationships of lasting value between colleges and employers.”
Jan Algozine, the Director of Experiential Learning and Career Services at Silver Lake College, said 72 of the college’s 97 interns (not counting student-teacher interns) during the 2013-14 academic year were supported by the Career Ready Internship Grant.
“Businesses and nonprofits have the opportunity to see what an individual can do when they’re interning, and interns get valuable experience as well,” Algozine said. “We’ve had individuals hired directly because of their internship experiences. This grant is truly changing people’s lives.”
About 95 percent of the Silver Lake College interns in 2013-14 worked with groups in Manitowoc County, including places like the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Holiday House, Two Rivers Main Street, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA.
“I feel very strongly that Great Lakes is on the right path to help people succeed and be successful,” said Algozine, noting that the grant was written by Mary Snyder, a fellow employee at Silver Lake College. “They’re doing a very powerful thing with these grants.”
