Dr. Diana Shapiro, Assistant Professor of Piano at Silver Lake College, has been invited to be a jury member at the Chicago International Duo Piano Competition that will take place June 8-11 Evanston, Ill.
Twenty quarter-finalists from an original field of 32 highly-qualified applicants from Europe, Asia and North America will compete.
“I see this invitation as a natural extension of my teaching – an opportunity to communicate music to younger artists across the world,” said Dr. Shapiro.
“I have been fortunate in my own career to be inspired by wonderful mentors who helped me search and find the true meaning of music, and I hope I can give back to the aspiring artists,” she said.
Dr. Shapiro joined the faculty at Silver Lake College in 2012.
She and pianist Dr. Stanislava Varshavski, an Adjunct SLC Professor, have been playing as the Varshavski-Shapiro Piano Duo since 1998. They performed in late April with the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra, receiving high praise from the Wichita Times Record News.
“The piano duo, with, confidence, technical prowess and unrelenting passion, dazzled Saturday night's Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra's audience at Memorial Auditorium, the final concert of the season, for what was a stunning final show,” said the review. “I could just say ‘Wow!’ about this concert and ‘Wow, again,’ but even that might be an understatement.”
The duo has captured top prizes at numerous national and international competitions, including the most prestigious competition for piano duos—the Murray Dranoff International Piano Competition in Miami.
