MANITOWOC, Wis. — Eighteen Silver Lake College chorale and opera program students shared their gift of music with Wisconsin and Minnesota audiences over spring break in mid-March.

They were led by Jonathan Kim, assistant professor and director of choral activities, and Emily Davis, opera director.

“Overall, the tour offered great exposure to Silver Lake College’s vocal music offerings to a wider community in the Midwest, as well as an opportunity for Silver Lake College students to watch ensembles and performances by organizations outside of Wisconsin,” Davis said. “Students returned refreshed with new ideas to apply to their singing and performing, and we look forward to showcasing these in the future.”

In addition to giving concerts, singing in Masses and performing for high schools in Minneapolis and Marshfield, students observed a professional choir in Minneapolis, The Singers, and had a master class with its director, Matthew Olson. They also participated in a movement class for singing actors with voice coach Marilyn Habermas-Scher, and attended “Rigoletto” at the Minnesota Opera.

“Not only was it an amazing educational experience for us as a department, but it was great way for me to bond with my friends and to grow as a professional,” said Benjamin Karnitz, sophomore majoring in instrumental pedagogy and performance. “Going to the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis was an awe-inspiring experience for all of us. It was an incredible space to be in and sing it, and was a true chance for us to be able to see God’s beauty and what He has given us.”

In addition to Karnitz, students who took part in the tour included Ashley Reif, Brianna Scott, Meg Lehman, Brad Fahley, Niyimbona Fadhili, Michael Stearns, Theresa Nier, Jonathan McConnell, Allyson Wasmer, Hanna Stolper, Dawn Welling, Young Moua, Lydia Matthews, Shannon DeGrave, Noah Liermann, Christopher Ducasse and Emma Knickelbine.
