SLC receives two-year grant for Camp Explore from Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

Thanks to a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, twice as many students in grades 3-9 will be able to attend Silver Lake College’s Camp Explore this summer.

“The grant, which SLC has received for the first time, allows Camp Explore to expand, so that’s exciting,” said Mary Snyder, SLC Grants and Planned Giving Specialist.

The two-year grant, for $8,800 each year, also will allow qualified students to apply for camp scholarships.

“Our goal is to serve 50 students with 22 students participating on scholarships this year,” Snyder said.

The camp runs July 27-31 at the college, located at 2406 S. Alverno Road, Manitowoc. The deadline to register is July 17.

“Camp Explore offers students an opportunity to get a head start on the college preparation process. They become more familiar with being on a college campus and the expectations of a college student,” said Tara Wachowski, SLC's School and Community Outreach Coordinator.

“We offer classes in computer science, humanities, science, the fine arts, and get them excited about learning," Wachowski said. "We also offer team building, a caving field trip to Ledge View Nature Center in Chilton and other enrichment activities."

A residential experience, which allows children to stay in the dorms, also is available to students in grades 5-9.

“Each year we have a larger number of returning campers so I think that says a lot for the experience of Camp Explore,” Wachowski said. “Campers come away with an increased sense of self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning.”

Madison Moore, 14, of Valders, enjoyed it so much she returned for a second summer.

“It was really, really fun,” she said. “I got to make a lot of new friends and I still keep in touch with some of them.”

She also enjoyed her computer class. “We learned how the computer processes words and pictures. I was amazed at how complicated it can be. It was cool,” Madison said.

Emily Glaser, 14, of Manitowoc plans to participate for her fourth summer this year.

“Camp Explore is an experience that I feel everyone should go through at least once in their life," Glaser said. “Camp Explore is fun, hands on and I have met many new people. It’s just great.”
