Music Conducting Award

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Silver Lake College student Christopher Ducasse, a choral music education major, was named winner of the 2018 Wisconsin Choral Directors Association Student Conducting Competition.

The state competition was held on Jan. 11 in Wausau as part of the WCDA annual conference, where choral educators and students from Wisconsin schools gathered in a two-day conference of clinics, sessions, concerts, rehearsals and other activities.

Ducasse is a native of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. As winner of the competition, he was given the opportunity to conduct the women’s 150-member All-State Honors Treble Choir rehearsal in conjunction with the WCDA conference. He also had the chance to work in a conducting masterclass with Dr. Mary Hopper, director of choral activities at Wheaton College in Illinois.

“I’m very proud of Christopher,” said Jonathan Kim, assistant professor and director of choral activities at Silver Lake College, who attended the event. “This past semester, he worked extremely hard to develop his conducting gestures. He placed first ahead of students from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Concordia University and Carroll University. I look forward to sending him again and other students from Silver Lake College next year.”

The annual state conducting competition focuses on conducting gestures and communication skills within the rehearsal setting. Winners from past WCDA conducting competitions have secured some of the finest choral directing and teaching positions available, according to the organization.
