SLC to present Varshavski & Shapiro Piano Duo

MANITOWOC, Wis. — The Varshavski & Shapiro Piano Duo will perform at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance at Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road.The duo is made up of Dr. Diana Shapiro, assistant professor of piano and undergraduate music department chair, and Silver Lake College adjunct music faculty member Dr. Stanislava Varshavski, recently named the director of music education at the Holy Family Conservatory of Music. 

Both Russian natives, they met at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where they were encouraged to play as a piano duo.

They have captured top prizes at numerous national and international competitions, including the Murray Dranoff International Piano Competition in Miami, Florida, the most prestigious competition for piano duos. In 2012, they were invited to join the distinguished Astral Artists after winning the organization’s national audition in Philadelphia.

Madison Magazine describes the duo’s performances as “edge-of-your-seat stuff.” 

Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (55 and older) and $5 per ticket for students (ages 5-18).

Before the concert, the public is invited to view two Art Exhibits, the Craig Grabhorn “Fresh Coast” exhibit of photographs and paintings in the Donald P. Taylor Gallery, and the Lakeshore Artists Guild exhibit of various works by its members in the Du Charme Erdmann Gallery.

A free artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 in the art department on the first floor of the main building as part of Night of the Arts, an evening celebrating music and arts at Silver Lake College. The public is welcome to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments, as well as live music by Silver Lake College students.
