UNDERGRAD_Chris-Rettler-for-WEBChris Rettler wanted to give something back to the Silver Lake College community on this, her 25th year on campus.

So, on Nov. 19, the Assistant Professor and her husband, Tom, officially donated a large, limited edition print of “America! America!” by well-known artist Terry Redlin, during a reception in the campus’ Dining Hall.

The print, which is part of Redlin’s “America the Beautiful” series, hangs on the third floor of the Main Hall, just down the hall from Rettler’s office. It shows the daily raising of the American flag outside a snow-covered schoolhouse in the countryside.

“We were sitting at home one day and I said, ‘Tom, it’s going to be 25 years, what can I give back to Silver Lake College for all it has done for me?’” she said. “And I thought a Terry Redlin picture would be a wonderful idea. Terry Redlin and St. Francis both embraced simplicity.”

Rettler has been teaching for 52 years, including 42 in some form of parochial education. She added that she continues to love teaching and preparing students for the future, pointing out that a sign in her office reads, “The object of teaching a child is to enable the child to get along without the teacher.”

Rettler said she’s grateful to have worked with so many generous colleagues and students over the years.
