Varshavski & Shapiro Piano Duo to perform Nov. 11

MANITOWOC, WIs. — The Varshavski & Shapiro Piano Duo will perform at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 in the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance on campus, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The duo is made up of Dr. Shapiro, assistant professor of piano and undergraduate music department chair, and Silver Lake College adjunct music faculty member Dr. Stanislava Varshavski.

Both Russian natives, they met at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where they were encouraged to play as a piano duo.

They have captured top prizes at numerous national and international competitions, including the Murray Dranoff International Piano Competition in Miami, the most prestigious competition for piano duos. In 2012, they were invited to join the distinguished Astral Artists after winning the organization’s national audition in Philadelphia.

Prior to the concert, enjoy a free artists’ reception, as part of Night of the Arts. The reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 in the art department, located on the first floor of Main Hall.

Meet the artists taking part in two exhibits, enjoy refreshments, a live painting demonstration and live music by Silver Lake College students Lydia Matthews, piano; Will Elliott, string bass; and Ben Johnston, saxophone.

Art exhibits include "Tactile Type: Recent works by Stephanie Carpenter," running through Nov. 18 in the Du Charme Erdmann Gallery and the “Lakeshore Artists Guild Exhibit,” showing from Nov. 7 through Dec. 16 in the Donald P. Taylor Gallery.
