The Silver Lake College women’s basketball team continued its winning ways this past week, defeating Robert Morris University-Peoria (Ill.) and the University of Wisconsin-Marinette.
The Lakers beat host RMU-Peoria 101-94 in double overtime on Jan. 17 for their eighth straight victory.
In the first overtime, SLC trailed by three points with 12 seconds remaining. But sophomore forward Danelle Buck, a Valders High School graduate, hit a three-point basket to send the game to a second overtime. SLC then scored the first four points of the final period to seal the victory.
Senior guard Kaela Cheesman of Rolla, Mo., led the Lakers with 28 points (including six three-pointers), six assists and five steals. Also for the Lakers, senior forward Courtney Clavers of Brillion scored 20 points, Buck finished with 17 points, senior forward Raelyn Woock of Burnett had 12 points and 13 rebounds, and sophomore guard Danielle Byrum of Sheboygan added 14 points, including four three-pointers.
SLC (13-3) is ranked No. 6 nationally in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 poll.
SLC 99, UW-Marinette 43
The Lakers extended their home-court winning streak to 17 games with a victory on Jan. 13.
SLC led 40-13 at halftime and increased its offensive firepower in the second half.
Pacing the Lakers was Clavers (17 points), Byrum (16 points), sophomore forward Daisneekqua Thompson of Pontiac, Mich. (12 points, 13 rebounds), Woock (11 points, 10 rebounds), freshman guard Ashley Rumlow of Oshkosh with 12 points, and junior guard Amanda Kudick of Kewaunee with 13 points, eight assists and three steals.
Northland 82, SLC 54
Despite making all 13 of their free-throw attempts, the Lakers lost on Jan. 15 in Ashland.
Senior guard Denzel Smith of Kenosha led the Lakers with 17 points, while senior guard Austin Allen-Walker of Milwaukee added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Junior center Stevens Alexis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., pulled down six rebounds for SLC. Freshman guards Corey Lloyd of Irmo, S.C., and Nemanja Peric of Sabac, Serbia, each added seven points.
Mayville State 96, SLC 63
Senior forward Tyler Wells of Canton, Ohio, came off the bench to score 15 points, but the Lakers fell short on Jan. 16 in Mayville, N.D.
Smith led the Lakers with 16 points, while Allen-Walker added nine points.
Valley City State 83, SLC 70
Smith poured in 25 points, but the Lakers lost on Jan. 17 in Valley City, N.D.
Allen-Walker added 17 points, and Alexis finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Andrews 85, SLC 76
The Lakers closed to within 80-74 with 30 seconds left, but couldn’t sustain the rally in a loss on Jan. 13 in Berrien Springs, Mich.
SLC trailed 37-27 at halftime.
