Denzel Smith scored 30 points to help lead the Silver Lake College men's basketball team to a 66-62 victory over Maranatha Baptist University on Jan. 19 in Manitowoc.
Smith, a senior guard from Kenosha, made 11 of 23 shots from the field, including six of 14 three-point attempts. He also pulled down six rebounds.
The Lakers made 12 three-pointers while holding Maranatha to one-of-16 from three-point range.
Freshman guards Nemanja Peric of Sabac, Serbia, and Corey Lloyd of Irmo, S.C., each added eight points for SLC. Sophomore forward Luka Jovicic of Pontpierre, Luxembourg, finished with seven points, while freshman guard Mateja Masic of Belgrade, Serbia, had four assists.
Clarke 89, SLC 68
Senior guard Austin Allen-Walker of Milwaukee had 18 points and five rebounds in the Lakers' loss to their NAIA opponent on Jan. 23 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Sophomore guard Jordan Portee of Pontiac, S.C., added 10 points and five assists for SLC, while senior forward Tyler Wells of Canton, Ohio, and Smith each had eight points.
Junior forward Stevens Alexis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jovicic each pulled down six rebounds.
UW-Marinette 98, SLC 93
The Lakers fell short against visiting UW-Marinette on Jan. 21.
SLC 68, Maranatha Baptist 58
Senior forward Raelyn Woock of Burnett finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Lakers bounced back from a slow start to earn a victory on Jan. 19 in Watertown.
SLC is ranked No. 6 nationally in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 poll.
Senior guard Kaela Cheesman of Rolla, Mo., and sophomore forward Danelle Buck, a Valders High School graduate, also had 12 points each for SLC.
Junior guard Amanda Kudick of Kewaunee added nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
Clarke 88, SLC 60
Buck came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, but the Lakers couldn't get past their NAIA opponent on Jan. 23 in Dubuque, Iowa.
SLC recovered from a slow start to tie the game 22-22 late in the first quarter, but Clarke steadily pulled away.
Sophomore guard Danielle Byrum of Sheboygan added 13 points, including three three-pointers. Woock finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.
