MANITOWOC, WIS. — Footwear will be the focus of an art exhibit by Katie Ries entitled, “WERKBOOTS,” running Sept. 26-Oct. 28 in the Donald P. Taylor Gallery at Silver Lake College, 2406 S. Alverno Road. The exhibit, an event of “Fashion This: Exploring Sustainable & Ethical Fashion Through Art & Design,” is being done in collaboration with St. Norbert College in De Pere. Admission is free.

“I’m excited about Katie’s exhibit,” said Erin LaBonte, associate professor of art at Silver Lake College. “She is confronting really relevant issues in today’s society in a very hands-on way that is sure to create meaningful dialogue. Oftentimes we think of art as something that is stagnant and that we aren’t allowed to touch. Katie seems to be breaking away from these ideas. I think the college audience will really respond to her work.”

Ries is an assistant professor of art at St. Norbert College. As an artist and educator, she creates drawings, prints, objects and events about modern environmentalism. Ries earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee and her Bachelor of Arts from Colorado College. Her work is in private and public collections throughout the United States. You can see more of her work at her website: whoshareswins.com.

“I am concerned about our modern lives — the impacts they have and the resources they require,” said Ries in her artist statement. “To that end, I make art that promotes practices and ideas of environmental sustainability. ‘WERKBOOTS’ is an ongoing project in which I look at contemporary fashion production, my buying impulses as a consumer, and what it means to be a contemporary maker and moderate environmentalist.”

The Donald P. Taylor Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located on the first floor of Silver Lake College’s main building.

Other events being held in the Donald P. Taylor Gallery at Silver Lake College as part of “Fashion This” include:
