The health care industry is in a constant state of change, and the nursing field is at risk of flatlining. The demand for medical care is rising, hospitals around the country are desperate for nurses, and Wisconsin is no exception.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts job outlook for Registered Nurses from 2014-24 will grow 16 percent, a much faster rate than average. Here in Wisconsin, we’re without a doubt facing an unprecedented shortage of registered nurses. Baby boomers are quickly approaching retirement and aging nurses are leaving the field in droves.

There’s a silver lining to this news, however, if you’re considering pursuing a nursing degree. Simply put, there’s no better time than now to enter this exciting field. Read on to see just how positive the outlook is for nurses with bachelor’s degrees in the next 10 years!

Two Kinds of Settlers 

Imagine two settlers in the early American West. One settler decides that he’ll be satisfied with a simple life at the foothills of a mountain. The second settler chooses to venture onward up the mountain. He wants a grander view of the plains below, and he has the stamina to get there.

Now scratch the settler thing. Settler Number 1 is like a nurse with an ADN (Associate’s Degree in Nursing) and Settler Number 2 is like a nurse with a BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing).

Neither path is inherently superior; it just depends on what you want with regards to your career.

Silver Lake College Admitting Students into Undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

The Wisconsin Board of Nursing voted unanimously on Jan. 14, 2016, to approve authorization for Silver Lake College to begin admitting students to its new four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

The state-of-the-art program, which will begin in fall of 2016, will help address the rapidly increasing need for nurses as growing numbers of people requiring health care (including older nurses) reach retirement age.

Nurse in Training: One Student's Journey to Nursing School

Silver Lake College freshman Shamir Jackson isn’t the first in her family to attend college.

However, she is determined to be the first to graduate with a four-year degree.

The 19-year-old nursing major from Milwaukee is a recipient of a number of grants, including a $2,900 Wisconsin Tuition Grant and a $1,000 Wisconsin Talent Grant.
